Invisible Hopes

This May 27th, 2021, Lam Horas Film proudly presents the Invisible Hopes movie by director Lamtiar Simorangkir. This eye-opening documentary depicts the life of incarcerated women, and the children that was born behind bars. Shot mostly at Pondok Bambu female penitentiary in East Jakarta, the documentary film follows the lives of several inmates, some pregnant, their children and their experience.

SI Jakarta was one of the proud sponsor of the movie, alongside SI Kemang and SI Kebayoran Baru as Tiar is a Soroptimist member too. This movie took some time to make because of the pandemic and the limited resource to film inside the prison. The shooting first started in 2018. However, Tiar push through and created a beautiful documentary.

“In 2017, I visited a prison where I met with a little girl who lives in one cell with 42 inmates. She was just one and a half year old. I was so sad and angry to see that her playmates are adult who are perpetrator and she had to follow prison rules. When she heard the prison bell, that indicates the closing time of the cell, she understood what that meant and without having to be told she get in to her cell just like inmates, then waved ‘goodbye’ to me. That broke my heart and made me determined to do something to help them. I was very sad, surprised, and angry. For me who has lived a free and happy childhood, I felt this is unfair that those innocent children lost their freedom as a child and have become invisible victims in jail,” said Tiar.

Thus, the movie felt very personal and touching too. Not only did Tiar focused on the documentary, she also hosted several fundraising to support these children and women in prison with vitamins, diapers, formulas, toiletries, etc.
